Standards-based smart manufacturing, built on an open standard

SmartRun Tech is a member of CESMII, the Clean Energy Smart Manufacturing Innovation Institute, and a Technology Provider of the Smart Manufacturing Innovation Platform (SMIP) built on i3X — the open API that lets manufacturing applications run on any compliant plant, not just ours.

Membership

Why we joined CESMII

CESMII — the Clean Energy Smart Manufacturing Innovation Institute — is the U.S. Department of Energy-backed national institute for smart manufacturing. It brings equipment vendors, platform providers, and manufacturers together around open standards instead of one-off, proprietary integrations.

As a member, SmartRun Tech builds directly on that foundation. Our platform is designed around CESMII’s published SM Profiles and the i3X specification, so the solutions implemented on our platform can seamlessly be interoperable with other i3X compliant platform based solutions.

The standard

i3X: the standard powering our platform

i3X — the Industrial Information Interoperability eXchange — is CESMII’s open API for how applications explore, query, subscribe to, and write back plant data, regardless of which platform or protocol sits underneath.

Instead of every analytics tool, dashboard, or AI application needing a custom integration per vendor, i3X standardizes one contract: Namespaces, Objects, and Hierarchy. SmartRun Tech built our SMIP as a Technology Provider directly on that contract, so our applications are i3X-native from the ground up.

  • One contract, from plant floor to application
  • Portable applications that run on any i3X-conformant backend
  • Traceable all the way from raw data to a defined business objective

Why it matters

An open standard accelerates adoption

Standardizing on i3X changes the economics of getting a smart manufacturing project off the ground.

Faster integration

Applications built once against i3X connect to new lines and plants without custom point-to-point engineering.

Vendor-neutral

Customers keep control of their technology stack, with no lock-in to one supplier’s proprietary API.

Lower total cost

Reusable SM Profiles and one common contract cut the engineering hours typically spent per site.

Future-proof

As CESMII publishes new companion specs — CNC, energy, ISA-95 job control — the same architecture extends to cover them.

Standardized security

Access control and authentication follow one governed model instead of a different scheme per integration.

Ecosystem access

Membership connects SmartRun Tech, and by extension our customers, to a growing library of published profiles.
